Overcoming Difficult Trials

Jewel sings Simple Gifts

I hope this simple song of grace eases any suffering you may have tonight. I wish you peace and joy.

“It’s a gift to be simple, Its a gift to be free,
It’s a gift to come down where you ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
Will be in the valley of love and delight.”

I have always loved this song. I remember singing it often as a child. My hope in posting this today is that the simplicity of the song, the gentle way Jewel sings it gives you peace.

I have had insomnia as of late, and a sick dog :> (
I plan on drifting off to sleep with this song in my head. Who knows, I may even sing it out loud to my God. Blessings.

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8

When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Proverbs 3:24

  1. Insomnia can be a gift for productive inspiration. I pray your dog will get well.

    • Thank yo for the prayers on behalf of my dog, Bosco. He was with me through the whole brain tumor recovery and is very special. I took him to the animal hospital last night, paid for an X-ray only to find out that they don’t see anything wrong with him. He is still sick so I am concerned.

Yes, I do my best writing late at night, but I just got a job where I have to be up at 6:15am. I don’t know if I should just stay up all night and sleep from 8:30am-2:00pm. I think I will need those mid-day hours to run errands so I am trying to be in bed by midnight.

  2. The song is beautiful. Jewel is the perfect artist for it.

I’m so sorry, I was not aware that Bosco was sick. Cupcake and I will add him to our prayers each day. xo

    • Thank you so much Genevieve. Bosco is my white “shadow” and he saw me through a lot this year. Satan knows right where to fire his fiery darts so your prayers are appreciated. He is a little better today. Tell Cupcake thanks for the prayers too.

  3. Beautiful! Thanks for introducing me to it.

  4. This song was written by Elder Joseph Brackett Jr., 1797-1882, a Shaker.
Shaker hymns usually have two or more verses of text, and Shaker songs have only one verse. Since “Simple Gifts” has only one verse, it should be classified as a song.

To turn, turn will be our delight
‘Till by turning, turning we come round right.

These words are dance instructions. Several Shaker manuscripts identify this tune as a “Dancing Song” or a “Quick Dance.”

Aaron Copland wrote the orchestral variations of “Simple Gifts” in his ballet score, Appalachian Spring, one of the greatest classical works of the 20th century.

  5. please visit my blog ..myownheart.me i have nominated you for an award it is under the post six stars. congrats!

  6. Thank you so much Jen. However, I have made a personal decision not to accept any more blog awards for now. I have had 2 nominations so far and that is enough to let me know that I am hearing from God, and writing posts that are encouraging to my readers. The feedback from everyone is positive and that is enough for me. I don’t want to take away any glory from God. My soul purpose and joy is to encourage others. Thank you for your encouragement and thoughtfulness, it is greatly appreciated. Blessings!
