Overcoming Difficult Trials

Dear Reader,

I love to eat.  My plump body is proof!!  Recently, I have been working on healthier eating choices.  I have my diabetes almost under control but the holiday goodies are not always sugar free and I confess I certainly ate my share. I know I need to continue with my decision to make better health choices but it is a daily struggle for me.

Feeding our spirit and soul is also something all believers should take seriously into account.  Personally, I am a bit more successful with this “feeding” since spiritual desserts do not make my blood sugar rise!!

The Bible tells us that we need to feed our spirit by reading God’s Word.  It does not need to be ten chapters in Numbers as even one scripture that you can meditate on all day will be a feast for your soul.  Memorizing the scripture will be a jewel in your pocket, as the Holy Spirit will call it back to memory when circumstances fit the need of the verse.

When a person does not eat (anorexia is such a thief as well) their body weakens and gets sick.  Some will even starve themselves to death.  I love how God’s a lover of analogies!  Indeed, if we starve OUR SOULS of the bread of life (Living Word), we will weaken our spiritual walk and relationship with Christ.  We will get “sick” and start sinning, rebelling, and loosing fellowship.  Some could even walk away and deny their God and the promised salvation given by His death on the cross.

If you are going through a difficult time and you find your faith being tested, you have a choice.  You can either sit down and not move forward in your relationship with God, questioning and yelling at Him for all the trouble you are having to suffer OR you can choose to trust Him and exercise your faith.  Faith that God has a reason for permitting the trial in your life.  Faith that God has good intentions for not only you but also all of the ones around you.

Is it easy to have faith and trust God when you feel lost in the darkness and when you are suffering so much?  Of course not!  God never promised us that our walk would be easy.  Think of the early Christians and all of the cruel persecutions they had to suffer. What helps me is to remember the following things.  I hope they encourage and help you.

1)   God is love.  He created us because He loves us.  Proof of His love is that He allowed His only Son to die (a painful death) for us.

2)   The Bible was written for our benefit: to instruct, encourage, and warn of things to come and to tell us of the schemes of the devil.

3)   God does not lie, He can’t as we are told this in Numbers 23:19.

4)   Since the Word of God was written by the Spirit of God, who cannot lie, we can take comfort in the truth of the scriptures.

5)   Now pick any verse that comforts you.  I have 4 Life Verses.  One of them is Jeremiah 29:11.  It speaks of a hope and a future.

May the truth of the Word of God speak comfort to you today, restoring your hope for a prosperous future.  Just remember, prosperous does not necessarily mean your finances!

NUMBERS 23:19 (NIV)  God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

I SAMUEL 15:29 (NIV)   He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie…

2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17 (NLT)    All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.  It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.

ROMANS 15:4 (NIV)    For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
